Chapter 1 - Herbert

“Herbert was neither a pleasant man nor a sympathetic man. He wasn’t funny either. His only amusing trait was his grotesque appearance, and only because this appearance, though hideous, was so monstrous that it was ludicrous, with hips almost twice as broad as his shoulders on a body less muscular than that of a scarecrow, making his excessive long legs and arms seem even more ridiculous during his frequent anger fits when they would look like propellers spinning out of control.
Herbert never smiled; he only smirked, and when so, his face lit up with an almost diabolic glare, his closely set eyes shining with either hatred or disgust. His lips always remained just a thin line on a face with a jaw so huge that it looked like a fishbowl.
All of the above would have been of little or no consequence, though, if Herbert hadn’t been a very cruel man.”
Chapter 2 - A Parisian Nightmare, Part 1

“In September, Indian Summer arrived in Paris, and so did a group of monsters.
Now, most people go to Paris to enjoy life, celebrate love, have their spouses drag them to one-to-many museums, suck in the atmosphere, and eat too much. But on this beautiful September day, these monsters entered a beautiful building in Paris to do the only thing they knew how to do:
Destroy a life.
The monsters came from one of the darkest areas of Denmark, not in terms of lighting but in terms of mentality – theirs was a way of life founded on hate and the need to destroy the lives of others, which they did, protected by titles and nepotism. They were evil.”

“As the weeks went by, Sofie tried to ignore the monsters’ presence, but it was almost impossible because Herbert and Oscar were very loud human monsters.
Sofie also tried to ignore the murmur whenever she passed one or more of the residents in the building. She could conclude that the extreme lies had spread and festered by now.
Human beings – they are hard to live with, but it’s illegal to shoot them!”
Chapter 3 - The Sentencing

“Bernard hadn’t wanted to leave Herbert. But Herbert had been so brave and strong, telling Bernard it was okay, he would be okay on his own, because he knew he could once again count on his brave friends. So, despite his fast-developing stress symptoms following this vicious attack by a single woman from the private sector, who was now out to kill him, Herbert had assured Bernard that he would be okay, as long as he was not alone at night, where most murders committed by single women from the private sector occurred. So, as per usual, Bernard had swiftly arranged for Oscar and Berta to be with Herbert from 8 o’clock in the evening until 8 o’clock in the morning.”
Chapter 4 - Florence

“Florence was angry, fuming with rage that the woman had not killed herself or been arrested, while Florence was still her neighbor.
Yes, it was all over now because Florence and her husband had sold the house and moved away. She wasn’t part of the team anymore, and so, she would not get any of the pretty things she wanted.
And all those new friends of hers were probably in some other house in the neighborhood, because the investigation always had to be conducted from a neighboring house in case the mentally ill woman went out, so they could enter her home without risk, or if she tried to kill someone in the neighborhood, and they had to step in quickly to save the person.”
Chapter 5 - Night Duty

“Lisa could hear Bernard and Walter. They were arguing in the adjoining room, in the basement, which they had borrowed from a good and decent family. Their investigation team could come and go as they liked at any time of day through the basement door. The family had believed all the stories Herbert and Bernard had told them.
“It still gets up every morning and works,” Walter said, sounding angry. “We are doing what we always do. What more can we do, Bernard?”
“How long has it been?” Bernard asked.
“Three months,” Walter answered.
“That is very strange,” Bernard said.
“It is more resilient than usual, that’s all. We will break it. We will succeed,” Walter said.
“I know. I have faith in your great scientific mind. I am just concerned that if we don’t break it soon, it will kill Herbert,” Bernard said. “Who works nights?”
“Burt, Ernie, Kirsten, Lisa, and I. Plus, George shows up once in a while,” Walter said.
“We need to increase the pressure, then. How often do you wake It up at night?” Bernard asked.
“Two times per night,” Walter answered.
“Wake It up every two hours from now on, and let’s see what happens within the next couple of weeks,” Bernard said.”
Chapter 6 - A Monstrous Christmas

““We have to plan the Christmas shifts,” Bernard said, standing in a room by the monsters termed HQ; in other words, a basement room in a private home owned by Danes who didn’t care about the law but who looked forward to looting the Unwanted’s house.
“Given that it hasn’t confessed and it isn’t dead, we have to ask our people to work on Christmas,” Bernard said.
“Well, I am sure people will understand –” Walter said.
“This cause does not require understanding; it requires absolute loyalty!” Bernard thundered.
“Of course, Bernard, but people have families -” Walter tried.
“Until this Unwanted kills their family!” Bernard exclaimed, angry to a degree that even surprised Walter.
The fact that this Unwanted was so resilient was a source of frustration for everyone on the team, but most of all for Bernard, who regarded the targeted woman’s perseverance as a failure on his part.”
Chapter 7 - The Cleaning Lady
All rights reserved © 2026 The Stories We Live
With Sofie’s lousy Spanish mixed with Portuguese, English, and French, Sofie found out that the young woman had been sent to clean and return with 20 euros for her boss, 4 of which she got to keep. How Sofie’s address had ended up on her schedule was a bit of a mystery. The young woman had no say in where she worked. All she got in the morning was a list of addresses, complete with digicodes and phone numbers. It was a 12-hour workday, and she shared a studio outside the city with five other young women.
Sofie knew what she was looking at, but right now, she did not need more problems.
